$2.5M Pledge Funds “Raye White Scholars”

Students will have additional scholarships available starting in the 2012-13 academic year, thanks to a generous $2.5 million pledge by University friend Raye White. The Raye G. White Endowed Scholarship is for students who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership skills and a commitment to their faith. When fully funded, the Raye White Scholars program will support an annual cohort of about 11 recipients who will each benefit from a $2,500 annual scholarship and perform a community service project each year.

 

Walk the Way of the Cross on Good Friday

Spend the morning of Good Friday in a reflective procession from the UST’s Chapel of St. Basil to the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. The Way of the Cross, hosted by the University of St. Thomas and Communion and Liberation, will begin at 10:15 a.m. on Friday, April 6 in front of the Chapel of St. Basil, 3802 Yoakum. Five stops will honor the passion of the cross; then Archbishop Emeritus Joseph A. Fiorenza will provide a blessing at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

 

Alumni Taco Tasting to Raise Scholarship Funds

The inaugural University of St. Thomas “Two Saints and a Taco Tasting” event, hosted by the Alumni Association will feature tacos from some of Houston’s most popular restaurants and the full line up from Texas’ oldest craft brewery, at 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, April 19 at Saint Arnold Brewery, 2000 Lyons Ave. The event will also feature a silent auction and live music and raise money for the UST Alumni Association Annual Scholarship Fund, to be awarded to continuing students.

 

Rector Hits a High Note with Original Music, Films

When not teaching music theory or directing the jazz ensemble, Dr. Malcolm Rector, assistant professor of music, can be found working feverishly on his latest project. Whether it is an art song, a feature length film or music for a ballet, Rector lets his creativity flow into creating award-winning works of art.

 

President’s Day of Service Volunteers Beautify Campus

On a cool Saturday morning, Senior English major Anthony Medina woke up early along with fellow students to help re-paint the 24-hour Student Lounge in the Moran Center. Medina was one of about 70 students, faculty, staff and alumni who participated in the 8th Annual President’s Day of Service on Feb. 25, working on projects to support the campus and the community.

French Professor Leguillon Dies at 88

Dr. Rolande Leguillon, professor emerita of French, passed away on March 17, at age 88. She taught at the University from 1968 to 2009. The University of St. Thomas will hold a memorial reception in her honor at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 31 in the Ahern Room, Crooker Center. Also, the L’Alliance Française de Houston, an organization in which Leguillon was greatly involved, will host a reception for friends to share their memories at 6 p.m. on April 17 at 427 Lovett Blvd.
