Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza Lecture
Wednesday, October 3, 2012 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM
Dr. John Borelli, Research Fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University, will give the annual University of St. Thomas Center for Faith and Culture Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza Lecture at 7:30 p.m. on October 3 in Jones Hall, 3910 Yoakum. Borelli's lecture topic will be “Understanding and Interpreting Vatican II and the Promotion of Dialogue.”

Beginning with John O’Malley’s analysis of Vatican II, we will explore the stated goals of Pope John XXIII, how Paul VI adopted and embellished those goals, how the Secretariat for Christian Unity promoted these goals in its work, producing three decrees on ecumenism, interreligious dialogue, and religious liberty and contributing to the outcome of the decree on revelation, noting particularly the change in Catholic-Jewish and Catholic-Muslim relations with the council and how these have unfolded, and how we view relations from our perspective fifty years later, drawing some conclusions and looking at what remains to be done.

Dr. John Borelli is the Special Assistant for Interreligious Initiatives to President John J. DeGioia of Georgetown University. He works on several university projects related to Catholic identity and the university’s Jesuit heritage and teaches courses on dialogue and comparative theology. In addition, Borelli serves as national coordinator for interreligious dialogue for the U.S. Jesuit Conference.
