Purchases and Recommendations

Purchases & Recommendations
Information Technology (IT) facilitates University technology purchases to achieve cost savings and plan for security considerations when implementing new software or hardware.

University departmental purchases require all of the following signatures:

  • Budget supervisor’s signature
  • Area vice president’s signature
  • IT vice president’s signature

Please contact the IT Help Desk with questions, concerns and requests for purchases.

Discounted Software for Faculty, Staff and Students
Discounted software can be purchased through the University's ICUT Agreement with University does not provide any support for personal software.

Departmental Purchases
Software and hardware must be purchased through the IT Department. Products purchased outside of the University will not be supported. After IT receives a purchase request, IT will compare available products, make a recommendation and discuss the solution with the requesting faculty or staff member.

Once the product has been determined, IT will email a purchasing order to the requesting individual. The client must print the purchasing order, obtain the budget supervisor’s signature and return it to the purchasing agent, Jennifer Condi.

Software Licensing
The University purchases three types of licenses:

  • A site license covers the entire University. Windows XP and Office are examples of site licenses.
  • An individual license covers only one person. Adobe Pro and Macromedia Studio 8 are examples of this license.
  • A concurrent license is shared through the University servers. SPSS and McAfee are examples of this license.

The University of St. Thomas supports a number of software solutions and has site licenses for certain products. Other products have a limited number of seats per license. If IT does not have an available seat, please purchase one by contacting the Help Desk at x6900 and opening a work order.

Software licenses are reserved for one computer only. Installing software on a secondary computer is software piracy. If a second computer needs a certain software package, please call IT and order another license.
