Welcome
Counseling and Disability Services (C&DS)

Counseling and Disability Services (C&DS) provides various services for students related to emotional adjustment, mental health, developmental issues, academic skill-building and crisis intervention.  Services provided are short-term and follow a brief intervention model.  Counselors will assess the nature and extent of a student’s concern and make appropriate recommendations.

Counseling and Disability Services (C&DS) provides academic accommodations for students with disabilities.  If a student has a documented disability, reasonable and appropriate academic accommodations for students who qualify under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 are available to ensure equal access to programs and opportunities at the University.

Announcements

Here are some helpful things to remember as you embark on the next exciting chapter of your life:
  • Visit UST!
    • Learn about your department of interest.
    • Take a walk up and down the mall.
    • Visit the Chapel of St. Basil and the labyrinth just outside.
  • Attend an advising session to determine what the best degree plan is for you.
    • Enroll as early as you possibly can in the summer to ensure you make the most of your time schedule.
  • Get to know the on staff counselors.
    • UST has 3 on-staff professional counselors located on the 2nd floor of Crooker Center here to help you with your concerns including home sickness, stress, depression or relationship troubles, to name a few.
    • Disability services are also offered for students.
    • To make an appointment contact Jennifer Shannon at 713-525-2169.
  • Apply for housing at either Guinan Hall or Young Hall.
    • Living on campus has a variety of benefits including: lowered travel time, fosters friendship with your peers, a meal plan, and independence.
  • Make sure to take a tour of YOUR classes before school starts so you won't get lost or feel foolish on the first day of class.
    • Although UST is a small community, as a new student it can be overwhelming to try to find your classes on the first day. Ease some of the stress by walking your schedule before hand.

About the Project: In recognition of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, in the fall of 2011 Counseling & Disability Services invited the UST community to participate in a memorial project, Paper Cranes for Peace, to honor those individuals whose lives were lost from this tragic event and their families.

In a popular Japanese story, it is said that folding 1,000 origami cranes makes a person’s wish come true (see the legend of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes). Our wish is for peace.
The Cranes are up and looking glorious in Crooker Center, where they will remain as a semi-permanent art installation.  We made a total of 1,200 cranes with the help of student volunteers, faculty and staff!
Highlight

If you are currently enrolled in Summer I or Summer II, or are a new student starting this summer for the Mendenhall Summer Institute, Disability Services has appointment times available to set up disability accommodations. If you have a documented disability, or if you think you might have a disability and have questions for the DS staff, contact us for an appointment today.

Reminder: students who have set up accommodations with DS already need only to call the DS Coordinator at 713-525-2169 to request new letters of accommodation. We can generally have these ready within 24 hours for current students.

Contact DS today at 713-525-2169 or shannoj@stthom.edu
