Today, it is important for all citizens to be familiar with a system of government that affects virtually every facet of life. The study of Political Science shows how governments operate and how politics is practiced. It is a diverse discipline and involves the study of both governments and related institutions at the local, state, national and international levels. The program is flexible, and students are encouraged to tailor their studies in anticipation of specific careers, graduate school or law school.

For more than 50 years, the Department of Political Science has provided educational opportunities for University of St. Thomas undergraduate and graduate students who have gone on to become leaders in the worlds of politics, business, law and education. The department has four full-time faculty members who offer courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science take courses in the following areas:

  • American Government
  • Quantitative Methods
  • Political Theory
  • Public Administration
  • Public Law & Policy

The department's 36-hour undergraduate program is designed to fully introduce students to the discipline of Political Science, provide flexibility to pursue a variety of career objectives and helps students acquire the skills necessary to be successful in graduate and law school, the workplace and in life.

The department is located in the Political Science House on the campus. Departmental facilities include a Mock Trial master classroom, the Michael J. Upchurch Student Lounge and a seminar room.

We welcome you to our department and hope that you will spend some time exploring the many things we have to offer. If you have questions, please contact us.
