Transition to Teaching (TTT)
  • The University of St. Thomas Transition To Teaching (TTT) program is an alternative certification program designed for graduate students who would like to add teaching certification to an existing content area undergraduate degree.
  • The total program is 20 credit hours.  The program is designed so that it may be completed in 12 months for regular classroom teacher certification —Bilingual and Special Education teaching programs have slightly different requirements.
  • University of St. Thomas undergraduate students, in fields other than education, can take the undergraduate level of some of these courses as electives and finish the certification program later at the graduate level if requirements for the graduate program are met.
  • Teaching certification in Texas is based on two different exams: one for content mastery and one for Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR)—this program prepares you for the PPR exam and success in the classroom
  • Content proficiency must be demonstrated on the appropriate Texas content examination prior to admission to regular classroom teaching certification program for the graduate level students
  • Students in Bilingual and Special Education programs may take courses as a “visiting graduate student” prior to admission to the certification program if deemed necessary by the advisor
  • You may begin the coursework in any semester but must complete six credit hours of teacher training prior to beginning teaching.
  • You can teach and earn full salary while completing the coursework for certification
  • TTT participants are responsible for securing a teaching position. Please see the Job Search Information  Document for a list of website to assist you in your search.

Required to begin TTT:
  • Meet requirements for admission to the Master of Education Program
  • Demonstrate Subject Mastery by passing the TExES Generalist EC-6, or 4-8 or 8-12 subject field test.

Special Note for Foreign Transcripts:
Persons with transcripts from a foreign country must have an analysis of transcripts by a service that will show how they are equivalent to U.S. standards. Please be sure to have a course by course (upper and lower division) evaluation with grade equivalents prepared. Once the analysis has been completed submit the evaluation to School of Education.  In order to be considered official, evaluations should be submitted in a sealed envelope or mailed directly to School of Education by the evaluation company.  The transcript evaluation services that the University of St. Thomas recognizes are:
