HONORS
Eligibility Requirements
Members of the Honors Program are usually selected from students entering the University of St. Thomas as freshmen. Because admission is limited and competitive, candidates are advised to apply during the fall semester of their senior year in high school. To be considered for admission to the Honors Program, a student must: 1) complete the University of St. Thomas admissions application and 2) arrange for an interview with the Honors Program.

The minimum standards for admission to the program are:
  • GPA > 3.50 on a 4.0 scale,
  • Top 15% of graduating class,
  • SAT score > 1220 (verbal and math) or ACT score > 27
  • Honors Interviews - Faculty Evaluations

Admission Process
Application
Students interested in the Honors Program should complete the University of St. Thomas admission application, which will serve as the application for admission to the university as well as to the Honors Program.

Invitation to Interview
All high school seniors, who have submitted UST’s admissions application and have satisfied the Honors Program admission requirements listed above, are considered for membership in the Honors Program. Prospective Honors students are contacted by the Office of Admissions and, if interested, scheduled for one of the two Honors Interview sessions conducted during the spring semester of the senior year in high school.

Interview
The Honors Interviews are held on the university campus on two Saturdays in the spring, typically in February and March; interviewees attend only one of these 2 sessions.

The interview day is divided into 2 parts:
  1. A brief overview of the Honors Program
    • Greetings from Director
    • Question-and-Answer period
  2. The Interview –
    • Interviewees are divided into discussion groups of 4-6 and seated around a table. Each group will have a Facilitator from the University staff whose task is to “break the ice” by asking for short introductions from each person, what interests each enjoys, and why he or she wishes to be in the Honors Program. The Facilitator will then move on to moderate a discussion in which all are asked to participate.
    • Interviewees are provided in advance with a set of short readings, usually on a controversial topic of current interest, whose authors take rival and conflicting positions. Interviewees are asked to read these passages in advance of the interview session, identify the issues at stake and analyze the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two authors.
    • Seated also at each table are two Faculty Evaluators, who at some point may join the discussion, ask questions, pose objections, and introduce additional perspectives for consideration, etc. The Faculty Evaluators will, at the end, submit an assessment of each interviewee to the Director and the Honors Program Committee as part of his or her overall portfolio.

Selection and Notification of Accepted Students
After the interviews, the portfolio of each applicant is reviewed and a decision is made concerning admission to the program. All applicants will be notified via postal mail concerning the decision prior to May 1st. Program membership is selective inasmuch as there is room for a maximum of 25 students in the incoming freshman Honors class, but applicants may be wait-listed.
