Emily Calasanz - Honors Freshman
Born and raised in Houston, Emily lived in Baytown and Clear Lake until sixth grade, at which time she moved to Singapore, where she remained until tenth grade. Her family moved back for her last two years in high school and Emily has just graduated in May from Clear Lake High School.
An active member of Anchor Club of Bay Area, Dance Club, HOSA, Peer Support and choir, Emily has earned a number of awards and honors, including Texas Scholar distinction, Superintendent’s Scholar, Excellence in Malaysia/Singapore History, as well as dance and academic achievement honors.
Emily first heard about St. Thomas from her mother. “I decided to go to St. Thomas because of the smaller school setting, nice dorm, and pre-med program. I felt like other schools didn’t give as much one-on-one support for being a pre-med student, like I felt St. Thomas had.”
Emily hopes to attend medical school after college and become a physician. She spoke of her experience shadowing doctors and nurses at Clear Lake Regional Hospital this past school year for her Health Science Technology class. “It was by far one of my favorite classes and it further verified my decision to go into the medical field… I’m very interested in surgery and I enjoy watching surgeries, so perhaps I’ll become a general surgeon.”
As for her decision to enter the Honors Program, Emily wanted to be a part of something that would challenge her and Honors was it. She’ll start her first year at UST in the fall, but in the meantime, perhaps she’ll have a chance to relax and enjoy her summer. “I like to read and listen to music,” said Emily. “I wish I had more time to play the piano because I love it—it’s often really relaxing for me. I also enjoy traveling, shopping with friends, and watching movies.” She’s been to almost every country in Asia along with Australia and New Zealand as well, which certain makes for some very interesting travel stories. |
