Gus O'Leary - Honors Freshman
Anglo-Irish in origin, this Honors freshman was born in Thailand and grew up in Scotland and Colombia. Having only lived in Thailand about a year and a half, Gus understandably does not remember anything about it. His also short stay in Scotland left only faint memories of the cold and many hospital rooms, thanks to his infantile asthma.
Colombia was where Gus and his family stayed the longest – eight years. “The pace of life is completely different,” Gus explains about his time there. “No one rushes, no one stresses. The prevailing attitude is: If I can do it tomorrow, why do it today? I loved it there.” As a result of his time in Colombia, Gus speaks Spanish fluently. He and his family then moved to the United States, where they have lived for the past seven years.
Gus recently graduated from Strake Jesuit College Preparatory. On the advice of a good friend, Gus decided to come to the University of St. Thomas for his undergraduate years, impressed with the reputation of the Theology and Philosophy departments here. As for the Honors Program, he thought “it sounded like to a lot of fun.”
Gus hopes to major in Philosophy and Theology while at UST. He also looks forward to continuing his athletic activities. Quite an athlete, Gus was involved in cross-country, track and fencing during his high school years at Strake and now looks forward to joining our fencing team. After graduation from UST, Gus plans to apply for a commission in the United States Marine Corp. In the meantime, we hope Gus is getting a chance to enjoy summer before starting his freshman year. |
