Margaret Ellen Wingfield - Honors Freshman
This bright, young Honors freshman was recently featured under the Student Highlights section of the St. Thomas website. The reason? Margaret was one of four incoming freshmen to receive the V.J. Guinan Presidential Scholarship, which covers full tuition during her undergraduate years at UST. Another of Margaret’s fellow Honors classmates, Tomas Diaz, also merited the scholarship.
Having grown up in Tomball, about an hour north of Houston, Margaret attended St. Agnes Academy, playing an active role in campus organizations. Her leadership of the campus ministry team, work in public relations for the school (such as speaking engagements), and her faith and morals earned her the honor of the St. Agnes Award.
Margaret first heard about St. Thomas from her sister Elizabeth, who graduated from UST in 2004. With the hope of continuing her Catholic education, Margaret chose to enroll at UST, taking part in the Honors Program “to participate in intellectually stimulating discussions and study a well-rounded selection of literature.”
Margaret plans to major in theology at UST and has hopes to become a theology teacher one day. What’s her motivation? “My parents are both teachers,” Margaret revealed, “and I want to teach theology because it is an important way that the Catholic faith is passed on to future generations.” It’s good to know that the future is in such capable hands!
In the meantime, Margaret is enjoying her summer, reading, shopping and relaxing before classes start in the fall. An interesting fact about Margaret? She has been a McTeggart Irish dancer since sixth-grade but recently had to stop because of a broken foot, though she misses dancing terribly. |
