Giancarlo Toledanes - Honors Senior, Chemistry
Born in Manila, Philippines, Gian grew up in Odessa, TX and attended Odessa High School before coming to St. Thomas.
While volunteering at the Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, St .Thomas was recommended to Gian by a doctor he knew. “I looked up the website and arranged a visit with the school. When I arrived at the university and saw the chapel, I was sold!”
Gian also applied for the Honors Program, interviewed and is now finishing his fourth year in the program. “I thought it could be interesting and it still is. The class dynamics are my favorite aspect of the course, but we don’t spend enough time on the readings sometimes.”
Along with a major in Chemistry and a minor in Philosophy, Gian is also working as a private tutor. He’s currently serving as Vice-President of the Student Affiliate of American Chemical Society, a resident assistant at Guinan, and volunteering with the Salvation Army Houston Area Command.
After graduating from UST, Gian hopes to attend medical school. In the meantime, he’s working on his Honor thesis, a chemistry project that traces the kinetics of the exchange of deuterium (heavy water) with ketones, using a proton NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance).
In any free time he has left, Gian enjoys reading, playing video games, watching movies, and fixing things. An avid sushi eater, Gian likes to cook as well, when he has the time.
