THE UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS DR. TERRY HALL Dr. Terry Hall Philosophy Department Associate Professor Honors Program Director In his bow tie and jacket, Dr. Hall’s familiar form can often be found either running around campus or hunched over his desk at the Honors House, hard at work. A man of many interests, it’s impossible not to learn something new in each conversation with Dr. Hall, but, be careful what you reveal to him. After all, he once worked as a spy, for the FBI. Education Born in Long Beach, California, Dr. Hall grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, attending Oklahoma State University for his undergraduate years. He then did his doctoral work at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He came to UST in 1993. “I liked the fact that it was a small liberal arts university that was dedicated to preserving the Catholic intellectual tradition,” he said. During his time at UST, Dr. Hall has taught many of the philosophy and Honors courses as well as taken on the responsibility for Honors Convocation and the freshmen Odyssey classes, among other things. He is currently also serving as the Honors Program Director, a position he has held since Fall 2000. Experience When asked why he chose to go into teaching, Dr. Hall’s answer was simply, “I like explaining things to others, especially things that I myself initially found difficult to understand.” And he did just that, first as a graduate assistant at The Catholic University, then at his first full-time teaching job at Corning College in Corning, New York, and now here at the University of St. Thomas. Other His many duties leave little time free, but what does Dr. Hall like to do when he has spare time? “Read philosophy books....well, not all my spare time. I listen to jazz and classical music a lot and try to talk my border collie out of hiding all my socks. I’m also known to be fond of watching an Irish soap opera from the 1990s called ‘Ballykissangel.’ I’m up to season four now.” © Copyright  University of St. Thomas.
