Women, Culture and Society (WCS) is a new interdisciplinary program for an undergraduate minor. The WCS Program is inspired by Pope John Paul II’s statement in the Apostolic Letter Mulieris Dignitatem that the “personal resources of femininity are certainly no less than the resources of masculinity; they are merely different. Hence a woman, as well as a man, must understand her ‘fulfillment’ as a person, her dignity and vocation, on the basis of these resources, according to the richness of the femininity which she received on the day of creation.”
In order to uncover this “richness of the femininity,” the WCS minor aims to introduce students (both women and men) to scholarship on women across the disciplines, including Catholic teachings on the dignity and vocation of women, to increase awareness of women in culture and society, to address social justice concerns, and to provide students with appropriate service learning opportunities in the community. |
