EDUCATING LEADERS OF FAITH & CHARACTER
Soria earns political magazine internship
Photo: Chester SoriaChester Soria normally prides himself as a wordsmith, but this aspiring journalist was at a loss for words when he learned he was named as one of nine recipients of the Spira Lopez Journalism Internship at “The Nation,” political magazine.

“I was in complete shock and disbelief. My fingers were numb and I couldn’t even type an e-mail response for another hour,” Soria said.

Soria, a communications major and Spanish and philosophy minor, graduated from the University of St. Thomas in December 2006. He will move to New York City in June to work for “The Nation,” for a three-month paid internship. Soria said he plans to make the The Big Apple his home if he finds career opportunities beyond the internship.

As the former editor of “The Cauldron,” UST student newspaper, Soria said he has, “ … always been involved in some sort of publication, be it self-made or institutional.” Since graduation, he has been working as an information developer and content editor at Shell Oil. He has recently taken an interest in political journalism.

First published in 1865, “The Nation,” is the oldest continuously published weekly magazine in the United States. The Spira Lopez Journalism Internship is offered to college students or graduates of Latino or Hispanic origin interested in magazine journalism and publishing. According to the publication’s Web site, interns apprentice at the weekly Nation magazine, where they learn editorial fact-checking skills, conduct research and evaluate manuscripts, among other editorial tasks. They also participate regularly in seminars with visiting journalists, editors, political figures and social activists.

Soria said his education at UST, especially the communications department, gave him the competitive edge in the internship application process because he maintained a close relationship with his former professors. He credits one professor in particular.

“I really do believe that any and all success I have in my future can be attributed to Professor (Nicole) Casarez.”
