Executed on a Technicality
Renowned death penalty expert Professor David Dow will deliver a lecture entitled, “Executed on a Technicality” at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20. Dow, a Distinguished Professor of Law at University of Houston, is the founder of the Texas Innocence Network and litigation director for the Texas Defender Service. He is author of two books on the subject. Cost $25: RSVP required.


2009 Aquinas Lecture Scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 29
Pope Benedict XVI has proclaimed a year dedicated to St. Paul, in preparation for the 2,000th anniversary of the apostle's birth. It is particularly fitting, therefore, that the annual Aquinas Lecture should focus on Thomas Aquinas as a Pauline commentator. This year, the Aquinas lecturer is Fr. Leo Elders, SVD from the Rolduc Seminary, The Netherlands, who will discuss “The Ripest Fruit: Thomas Aquinas as a Commentator on St. Paul.


Ecumenical Continuous Reading of the Bible
UST invites people of all faiths to hear and proclaim the Word of God through a continuous reading of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation at the “Word of God: The Bible Unites” event scheduled to begin Friday, Feb. 20 at 9 a.m. with an opening ceremony. The UST community, Catholic and non-Catholic religious and civic leaders will unite to serve as readers.

“A Night in Rio” Mardi Gras Gala
The 59th annual University of St. Thomas Mardi Gras Gala,
“A Night in Rio” is planned for Fat Tuesday, Feb 24, at the Hilton-Americas. This Brazilian-themed evening will honor Mr. and Mrs. Odis Peavy. Gala chairs, Kerri and Downey Bridgwater, are evoking an atmosphere of Carnival with samba and capoeira dancers from the Brazilian Arts Foundation along with the Latin groove of the band Mango Punch! Limited seating is available.


New Top Administrators Named
Dr. Dominic A. Aquila was named Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs on Dec. 1, 2008. He most recently served as Dean of Arts and Sciences from July, 2007 to the present.
Fr. John Gallagher, CSB, assumed the position of Interim Dean of Arts and Sciences in December 2008.


Professor Launches the Gratitude Project

What started as a creative class project in Assistant Professor of Psychology Elizabeth Maynard’s positive psychology class, blossomed into a campus-wide Gratitude Project where faculty, staff and students participated by posting their messages on a gratitude wall located outside the Psychology Department’s office. This innovative project was a learning experience for Maynard too.
