Faculty Training for Blackboard 

Registration and Cancellation Overview
Registration at least one day in advance is required for all training sessions. Seating is limited to 10-12 participants and is scheduled on a first-come basis. Use one of the Enroll Now links below to access the online registration form. All enrollment is tracked via the form.

If you have registered for a session but cannot attend, please use the form to cancel your registration. If you have any questions, please contact the training coordinator at tsstraining@stthom.edu.

Faculty members who have not had training on the current version of Blackboard should begin with the Bb 9 Fundamentals session. After that, select additional sessions that cover the skills you need: Assessments, Discussion Board, Grade Center, Group Management, or Retention Center.

Duration: Class sessions vary in length from 1 hour to 2 hours.
Location:  O'Rourke 103 unless otherwise noted.  Seating is limited to 10-12 participants per session.

Tutorials: Blackboard 9 Tutorials are PDF documents of 1-12 pages in length. Blackboard Support is no longer printing the entire manual.
Prerequisites:

Required—You must register for the classes below at least one business day in advance of attending. You must also have a valid UST Celt ID (this is your Blackboard Login).
Recommended—We suggest that you view your courses for the current or coming term before attending training. You may also wish to submit requests for course mergers or recycling of content via MyStThom's Faculty Center.

New & Enhanced Features
For a limited time, we are offering sessions at which instructors can “test-drive” new features such as Social Learning, Portfolios, Date Management, and Delegated Grading. They can also get an idea of Blackboard’s new look, including minor changes in the locations of certain options.

 

Blackboard 9 Fundamentals—[Enroll Now]
Target Audience: All
Duration: 2 hours

This session provides a general overview of the Blackboard system as implemented at UST. It is designed to provide new and existing faculty with a general understanding of the Bb 9 system basics and tools necessary to assist with teaching and course management. It is the prerequisite to all other sessions listed below.

 

Retention Center—[Enroll Now]
Target Audience: All
Duration: 1-1/2 hours
Prerequisite: Blackboard 9 Fundamentals

This session provides a general orientation to the Retention Center functions of Blackboard. This session will cover creating rules that will help gauge students’ engagement and participation, which can alert the instructor to potential risks. This session will also cover how to communicate with struggling students.

 

Discussion Board & Communication Tools—[Enroll Now]
Target Audience: All (highly recommended)
Duration: 1 hour
Prerequisite: Blackboard 9 Fundamentals

This session focuses on the Discussion Board and other communication tools that promote interactivity between instructors and students. Tools covered will include Discussion Board, Journals, Blogs, and Wikis (time permitting).

 

Grade Center—[Enroll Now]
Target Audience: All
Duration: 2 hours, more if needed
Prerequisite: Blackboard 9 Fundamentals

This session provides a general orientation to the grading functions of Blackboard.  It includes adding, deleting, moving, and freezing grade columns; exporting grades to Excel; adding a Test Student; and creating Rubrics. Also, you will learn how to create calculated columns, including weighted averages, and incorporate advanced grading schemes.

 

Group Management—[Enroll Now]
Target Audience: All
Duration: 1 hour
Prerequisite: Blackboard 9 Fundamentals

This session provides an overview of the functions that facilitate interaction between students in group settings. It covers creating groups, assigning group membership manually or automatically, and using graded assignments within groups.

 

Assessment Tools (Testing)—[Enroll Now]
Target Audience: All
Duration: 1 hour
Prerequisite: Blackboard 9 Fundamentals

This session focuses on creating and deploying tests within the Blackboard environment. Special attention is given to reviewing the distinctions between tests and surveys, using question pools (randomization), various testing options, and viewing and grading online tests and surveys.

Target Audience: All
Prerequisite: Blackboard 9 Fundamentals

Do you or your colleagues have specific questions about your Blackboard course? This open-format session provides faculty with guidance and hands-on Blackboard training. Our trainers will work with faculty on a specific problem or to troubleshoot an issue.  Please bring any documents, such as the course syllabus, that may need to be uploaded or displayed. Seating is limited to six participants for this session. All registering participants should complete the Blackboard 9 Fundamentals training prior to registering for this session.
