Learn How the Post 9/11 GI Bill Applies to Private Colleges
The University of St. Thomas will host a GI Bill information seminar for any veteran who wishes to learn more about the new Chapter 33, Post 9/11 GI Bill education benefit and how it applies to private colleges, from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 29.
 
University of St. Thomas Remembers Fr. Victor Brezik, CSB
University of St. Thomas said goodbye to Rev. Victor Brezik, CSB – philosopher, theologian, visionary and cornerstone of the institution. He died on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at the age of 96. He served as a professor of philosophy from 1954 to 1986, and on the board of directors for 24 years. In addition to his many contributions to the University, Fr. Brezik co-founded the University of St. Thomas Center for Thomistic Studies.
 
Murillo Receives Award from Clinton Global Initiative University
Interweaving elements of her heritage and her University of St. Thomas education, Ximena Murillo developed an internationally, award-winning humanitarian project. Out of the hundreds of projects submitted to the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U), Murillo’s project was singled out as one of the top three and noted by Former President Bill Clinton at the CGI U press conference.
 
UST Announces New Appointments
This summer, the University of St. Thomas has promoted several faculty and staff members to key positions: Lee Holm, acting director of Admissions to director of Admissions; Fr. Joseph Pilsner, CSB, associate professor and chair of the Theology Department, to dean of the School of Arts and Sciences; Dr. John Palasota, assistant professor of chemistry and associate dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, to associate vice president for Academic Affairs; Dr. Jerry Kramer, associate vice president of Academic Affairs, to writing program administrator; and Dr. Adam Martinez rejoins the University as associate director of the Center for Faith and Culture.
 
UST Launches African-American Alumni Association
Named in honor of one of the most beloved Catholic saints, the St. Martin de Porres Society was formed by Larry Payne 72' and fellow African-American alumni to maximize alumni participation at UST. The Society also aims to support the recruitment and retention of UST’s current and prospective African-American students.
 
UST MLA Graduate Elected to Houston City Council
As a law enforcement officer committed to his community, University of St. Thomas alumnus Edward Gonzalez said he saw his own values of social justice mirrored at St. Thomas. As the newly elected Houston City Councilman for District H, Gonzalez will continue to draw from those values and the knowledge he gained from earning a Master in Liberal Arts with a concentration in political science in 2007. Gonzalez won the runoff special election on Saturday, June 13.

UST-Houston Offers Courses to South Texas Residents at Our Lady of Corpus Christi
 
In This Issue:

Beginning in fall 2009, University of St. Thomas in Houston and Our Lady of Corpus Christi (OLCC) will offer Corpus Christi area college students the opportunity to take accredited courses leading to a bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Thomas, announced St. Thomas President Dr. Robert Ivany. UST will offer five freshmen-level courses for three credit hours each in the fall 2009 taught by University of St. Thomas faculty.
