| UST Psychology Students Study Abroad in Singapore |
 |
Knowledge of different peoples and cultures through study in foreign countries is valuable preparation for participating in the emerging global economy. A group of 12 UST students had the opportunity to study cross-cultural psychology on a 10-day study abroad to Singapore. Singapore was chosen because East and West meet in Singapore, an island nation home to citizens of Chinese, Malaysian, Indian, and English ancestry. |

| Former Ambassador to the Holy See to Speak on Campus |

President’s Lecture Series presents the Honorable R. James Nicholson, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15 in UST Jones Hall. Nicholson served as the United States Ambassador to the Holy See from 2001 to 2005. In this position, he became a well-known advocate for the elevation of human dignity, giving special emphasis to human trafficking, religious freedom, starvation and bio-tech food, HIV-AIDS and international terrorism. |

| UST MicroCredit Raises Funds to Empower Pakistani Women |

The University of St. Thomas Center for International Studies MicroCredit Program has partnered with Houston-based Hashoo Foundation USA in an ambitious effort to raise $20,000 to allocate micro credit loans to 100 women honey bee farmers in Northern Pakistan. “Plan Bee” expands employment opportunities for women in Northern Pakistan and generates a stable source of income. UST and the Hashoo Foundation held their first fundraiser in May and raised $1,170 towards their goal. |

| MLA Grad Applies Degree to Current Business, Future Career |

When choosing a graduate school, David Theis wanted to find a program that would strengthen his current career and provide personal enrichment along with the flexibility to change careers later in life. The University of St. Thomas Master in Liberal Arts program fit the bill. Theis, president and CEO of a Houston-based Leading Edge Turbine Technologies, has seen his company grow to 130 employees and revenues of more than $40 million per year. He is now ready to take a break from “corporate America,” so he’s heading to the classroom to teach history. |

| Call for Artists for Sidewalk Art Contest |

High school students are encouraged to sign up now to participate in the third annual I Madonnari Sidewalk Chalk Art contest to be held on Oct. 17. Sponsored by the University of St. Thomas and the Italian Cultural and Community Center, this original art competition will be held on the University of St. Thomas campus sidewalks during the 31st Annual Festa Italiana, Oct. 16-18. Applications are due no later than Sept. 18 with an application fee of $40. Go to www.houstonitalianfestival.com for information about the competition. |

Staff Sgt. DeRonnious Heidelberg hand-delivered a unique thank you note to University of St. Thomas President Dr. Robert Ivany on Friday, July 17. The thank you note – in the form of an American flag – carried with it the gratitude of the men and women serving in the United States Army who received care packages prepared by UST students, faculty and staff. The care packages were put together at a recent President’s Day of Service event held on campus. |
