Prof. William J. Cunningham

William J. Cunningham is Associate Professor Emeritus at the University of St. Thomas and a retired U. S. Foreign Service Officer. His diplomatic career included assignments to Korea, Japan (twice), Vietnam, Cambodia, Taiwan, the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, and the Department of State. He specialized mainly in Chinese affairs and is a former Director of the Department of State’s Chinese Language School in Taiwan.
His role in ping-pong diplomacy is described in Henry Kissinger’s White House Years . Cunningham served as Director of UST’s Center for International Studies from 1982 to 1993, and as Chairman of the Houston World Affairs Council from 1993 to 1995. He is past President of the Houston-Taipei Society. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees at the University of New Mexico and has done post-graduate work at Sophia University (Tokyo), Columbia University and the Foreign Service Institute. |
