Job Description: The Houston International Protocol Alliance maintains an ongoing internship program for qualified graduate and undergraduate students. These unpaid positions permit students to view diplomacy and international relations from a unique perspective and provide exposure to the opportunities available in the field of international affairs.  Interns will be exposed to all areas of the Protocol Alliance’s operations by participating in the daily operations of the office and by providing vital assistance to staff members.  Each intern will also have an opportunity to complete a special project independently.  These projects are chosen by a consideration of both the student’s interests and the needs of the Protocol Alliance; often they involve research, surveys, event planning, or writing.

Job description: Student interns will mainly be involved in a market research project regarding research & development in the U.S. oil and gas industry in the areas of Current Energy Sources and Renewable Energy.  Interns will assist in collecting information through desktop research and interviews with National Energy Laboratories, Major Universities listed by the Carnegie foundation as Doctoral Research Extensive Universities, 10 of the largest oil and gas majors and 10 U.S. independents, 10 of the largest contractor/engineering /service companies, and renewable projects and players in the Gulf Coast region.  In addition, student interns will take part in the preparation of a seminar and visitor program at the Norwegian Pavilion at the offshore Technology Conference (OTC). 

Requirements:  The student interns should have a structured approach to work and be able to work independently within the frame of the project description above. The interns must be willing and able to represent Norway and the Royal Norwegian Consulate General in an appropriate manner.

Practical issues:  The project outlined above will require two student interns working at our offices in 2777 Allen Parkway, Suite 1185 in the period February through April, and an additional week in May at the OTC (April 30 – May 3). The Junior Chamber of Commerce  and  the Alice R. Pratt Internships in International Affairs are paid, full-time positions, established to promote the international careers of current students or recent university graduates.

The intern's primary responsibilities are in IIE's International Visitor Leadership Program, assisting staff with the professional schedules of U.S. State Department international visitors to the Houston area. He or she will research professional resources in Houston, designing and implementing programs to meet the visitor's goals. The intern will assist in arranging professional meetings for rising and current international leaders with their U.S. counterparts, as well as coordinating hospitality and social activities for these guests. The intern is also responsible for administrative duties related to the International Visitor Leadership Program and may also be asked to work on special projects. Previous IIE interns have used the professional experience gained during their tenure in later careers in the U.S. Foreign Service, international business, teaching, and event planning.

In addition to exposure to international leadership, the intern deals directly with Houston leaders in the corporate, arts, local government, media, and academic sectors.

Interns will work approximately 8-10 hours a week on several major projects that will reach completion by the end of the semester. The Japan-America Society Houston is a non-profit organization to provide a non-political forum for discussion of issues between the United States and Japan and to promote greater cultural understanding between the people of both countries.

Two very exciting programs coming up will allow the intern to practice skills as an event planner/organizer.  The intern will assist in the coordination of one or both of the following major events:

Japan Festival (mid-April)
The process is as important as the product since the organization involves parallel JASH and Japan Business Association committees.  The intern will assist in the coordination and solicitation of vendors, performers, logistics and legal preparation, publicity, and fund raising to name a few functions.

Japan Bowl (mid-March)
Japan Bowl is a competition among high school students in Japanese language. Questions are in Japanese and deal with language including Kana and Kanji, as well as with history, culture, geography, and current events in Japan.   About 25 volunteers are involved in coordinating the questions, serving as timers, judges, and logistics specialists.  The intern will be responsible for coordinating volunteers and publicity, for example.

JASH Video and Book Library
This is an opportunity for someone to help us organize our books and magazines and establish an active program to make these available to our members as well as the forty other Japan American Societies in the United States. There is the possibility of expanding our collection very significantly while establishing a system for members to derive greater value.  The collection also offers an outreach opportunity to schools and other organizations.

Grant Research
The JASH operates as a non-profit organization, and thus must rely on the contributions of its corporate and individual members. The only way for the organization to reach outside of its fiscal limitations is to request grant monies from a variety of sources. The intern will be responsible for researching appropriate grants, researching requisites for application, and assisting in the grant request writing.

Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program:                           Combines a paid summer public policy internship with two weeklong seminars and a weekly lecture series. Journalism Internship Program

Offers paid placements at newspapers, major media networks and state-policy organizations providing experience in print, broadcast or investigative journalism. Internships occur during the spring, summer, and fall. Many of our internship hosts value students with political science backgrounds.

The Houston International Protocol Alliance maintains a year-round internship program for current graduate and undergraduate students. These positions permit students to view diplomacy and international relations from a unique perspective and provide exposure to the opportunities available in the field of international affairs.

Internship Opportunity with Armando Walle State Representative House District 140

We are seeking bright, hardworking individuals to assist with the day-to-day operations of the District Office of State Representative Armando Walle. Interns will gain experience in the inner-workings of a legislative office, including performing constituent casework, maintaining the Representative's schedule and communicating with constituents on a daily basis. Interns will be under the direct supervision of the Constituent Services Director. Interns must commit to work 10-15 hours per week.

United Nations Intensive Summer Study Program

The United Nations Intensive Summer Study Program will be offered from Monday, July 26 to Friday, July 30, 2010, by the John C. Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University and the United Nations Association of the USA. Designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, this unique program immerses participants in the political dynamics of the United Nations.

Students will attend official sessions at United Nations headquarters
as well as briefings at UNA-USA. Directed by Dr. Courtney Smith,
Associate Dean at the Whitehead School, and offered in cooperation
with UNA-USA, the course is designed to familiarize students with the
inner workings of the United Nations by bringing them together with
distinguished practitioners working in the field of multilateral
diplomacy. The program is structured around a series of seminars led
by U.N. officials and representatives of governments and civil society
on a wide range of global issues currently on the U.N. agenda.

Logistics:

Participants can expect to be immersed in activities 12 hours a day
for the full week of the program. Each day commences with breakfast
at Seton Hall, followed by a chartered bus to the U.N. Program
sessions continue throughout the day at U.N. plaza, with dinners
provided on campus in the evenings. Students will also have time for
cultural activities in New York City. On-campus single rooms with an
adjoining bath are available from July 25th to July 31st.
Participants may also choose to commute to Seton Hall for the duration
of the program.

Requirements:

The program offers two enrollment options: credit and non-credit.
Successful completion of either option results in a certificate from
the Whitehead School of Diplomacy. In addition, the credit option
allows students to earn three semester credit hours from Seton Hall
University.

Prior to the beginning of the course, participants will be responsible
for preliminary course readings and a short paper. All sessions of
the program are mandatory and students are required to actively
participate in dialogue and discussion with guest speakers and peers.

Students attending for credit must also keep a journal documenting
their reactions to the briefings and submit a research paper one month
after the program ends. Graduate students will complete extra
readings and an additional writing assignment.
