About
Some men see things the way they are
and ask, ‘Why?’ ” I dream things that never were,
and ask ‘Why not?’ ”
George Bernard Shaw
On January 23, 2003, the Center for Irish Studies opened in the Link Lee Mansion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Irish Consul General Charles Sheehan, Honorary Consul of Ireland John B. Kane, the Most Reverend J. Michael Miller, CSB (Coadjutor Archbishop of Vancouver; then University President), University President Emeritus and Founding Center Director, Dr. Joseph McFadden, Center Director Lori Gallagher, J.D., and many other well-wishing University faculty, staff and friends. Today the Center for Irish Studies resides at 4110 Mt. Vernon on the UST campus.
In its short history, the Center for Irish Studies has made its mark by offering a wide range of cultural events to the University community and the community at large as well as a broad array of academic courses in Irish Studies, both on campus and in Ireland.
The Center for Irish Studies is one of a kind in the Southwest. It serves as a focal point for the study of Irish history, literature, politics, law, language, music, art, drama, culture and society. The Center enhances the academic mission of the University by concentrating on a broad and coherent study of Ireland and Northern Ireland within an integrating framework of many academic departments and community organizations.
Academic Program: Course offerings include undergraduate and graduate courses in history, literature, political and social science, law and culture, theology, art history, drama, music and the Irish language. The University offers a minor and an Master of Liberal Arts graduate concentration in Irish Studies as well as a study abroad program in which students can study in Ireland and Northern Ireland and earn credit toward their degree at the University.
Building on the international dimension of the University’s educational mission, the Center affirms the historic and contemporary connections among Ireland, Northern Ireland, the Irish American community and the University. The Center encourages intellectual examination of the Irish experience in the United States and the Southwest.
Cultural Outreach Program: In addition to the academic program, each year the Center sponsors 9-12 lectures, concerts, programs and exhibits, and facilitates scholarships and research to enhance and serve the intellectual life of the University and the community.
