Peace Through Commerce Conference
On April 24, 2012, the William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies hosted an interdisciplinary conference with the University’s Center for Business Ethics entitled Peace Through Commerce Conference - The World in Our Classroom: The World in Our Boardroom.
Over 200 people attended various aspects of the conference, including round-table discussions among community leaders and the University community with our three internationally renowned conference speakers: William J. Flynn, Frances Hesselbein and Rev. Oliver Williams, C.S.C. Bill Flynn spoke to the University community and the community at large about What Drives Leaders to Become Involved in Helping to Resolve Conflict Situations? A Case Study in Northern Ireland. |
St. Patrick’s Day Mass
 St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually in honor of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. On March 17, 2012, Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza celebrated Mass in the Chapel of St. Basil, with the liturgy and music planned and performed by Dr. Brady Knapp, Director of the University’s Music Program, and other members of the Irish and UST communities. After Mass, guests enjoyed a traditional Irish feast of smoked salmon, Irish soda bread and scrambled eggs in Jerabeck Center. |
Clergy Lunch Raises Funds for Irish Studies
 During Lunch with the Clergy on Feb. 19, more than 40 people gathered to enjoy a delicious meal at Piatto Ristorante, owned by UST alumnus John Marion Carrabba. The feast was part of the 2011 Irish Gala festivities benefiting the William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies. Good-spirited members of the clergy rotated tables during the four-course meal of Piatto Italian specialties.
Participating members of the clergy included the Most Reverend Joseph A. Fiorenza, archbishop emeritus, and the Most Reverend Vincent M. Rizzotto, auxiliary bishop emeritus, both of whom were 2011 Irish Gala honorees. Additional clergy who joined in the meal were the Rev. Anthony Giampietro, chair of the UST Philosophy Department; the Rev. Ronald Schwenzer, president of St. Thomas High School; and the Rev. Brendan Cahill, advisory board member for the Flynn Center for Irish Studies, who also serves as the secretariat director of the Office of Clergy Formation and Chaplaincy Services for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
The event raised more than $5,000 for the Center.

William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies Celebrates New Residence, Ninth Anniversary
More than 100 guests attended the official opening of the new residence of the William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies and the celebration of the ninth anniversary of its inauguration on Tuesday, Jan. 24. The beautiful, house built in 1926, is located at 4206 Yoakum Blvd.
