A LIVING THOMISM FOR THE THIRD MILLENNIUM
Cardinal Avery Dulles Gives Annual Aquinas Lecture on ‘The Apologetics of St. Thomas Aquinas’
HOUSTON (February 21, 2006) – Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., delivered the 2006 St. Thomas Aquinas lecture at the University of St. Thomas at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in
Jones Hall, 3910 Yoakum.

CARDINAL AVERY DULLES GIVES ANNUAL AQUINAS LECTURE ON ‘THE APOLOGETICS OF ST. THOMAS AQUINAS’St. Thomas was not directly engaged in disputes with non-Christians, but in his Summa contra Gentiles he gives principles to be used for such disputes. The lecture
summarized the main elements of his method of establishing the credibility of the Christian religion. Then some attention was given to the viability of the method today, including current objections to the Thomistic proofs for the existence of God and to the biblical miracles. Some consideration was also given to new apologetical approaches.

Cardinal Dulles, a native of Auburn, N.Y., and a Harvard graduate, has authored more than 700 articles and published 22 books. He graduated from Harvard College in 1940 and attended Harvard Law School before serving in the U.S. Navy. He emerged in 1946 with the rank of lieutenant and in the same year entered the Jesuit Order. He was ordained as a priest in 1956 and awarded the doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Gregorian University in Rome in 1960. He served on the faculty of Woodstock College from 1960 to 1974. Pope John Paul II created him a Cardinal in 2001. Cardinal Dulles is the past president of both the Catholic Theology Society of America and the American Theological Society and professor emeritus at the Catholic University of America.

He is presently the Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society at Fordham University, a position he has held since 1988. The UST Center for Thomistic Studies, the only graduate philosophy program in the United States focused on the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas, sponsors the lecture. The 2006 lecture concludes the Center’s 25th anniversary celebrations. University of St. Thomas is a private institution committed to the liberal arts and to the religious, ethical and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education.
