Degree Plan
The mission of the Department of Environmental Science and Studies is twofold: (1) to educate students as to the moral imperative to care for the earth, especially as advanced by Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, and (2) to prepare students for graduate studies or entry-level positions in the environmental field. A secondary mission is to enhance the environmental awareness of individuals in the University and in the community through education, service and outreach.
Through the curriculum and its activities, the department seeks to address the most pressing contemporary environmental issues in light of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition and to instill in our students a stewardship ethic, one that includes a respect for life, an understanding of the proper role of humans in creation, and an obligation to future generations.
Two degrees are available:
Each of these interdisciplinary degree programs has a distinct emphasis linked to specific areas of professional practice while at the same time sharing common core courses in integral environmentalism.
The capstone experience for students seeking the BS or joint BA degree consists of the completion of an integrative senior capstone seminar and an environmental internship. Both degrees include numerous opportunities for field work in the local Houston area, nationally, or abroad.
