Placement Categories & Credit by Exam
PLACEMENT BY EXAMINATION IS REQUIRED FOR ALL STUDENTS ENROLLING IN A SPANISH OR FRENCH CLASS FOR THE FIRST TIME AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS. STUDENTS MUST PRESENT A PLACEMENT FORM, SIGNED BY THE APPROPRIATE SECTION HEAD, TO THEIR PROFESSOR ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS TO PROVE APPROPRIATE PLACEMENT. AT NO TIME WILL STUDENTS BE PERMITTED TO REMAIN IN A FIRST YEAR CLASS WITHOUT A SIGNED FORM.

Placement evaluations in Spanish and French are divided into written and oral portions. The written portion is done in the Language Acquisition Center (Malloy 245) during regular hours of operation by semester. Spanish students must arrange the oral portion, a personal interview, by appointment with Spanish section head, Professor Zambosco-Thomas, (713-525-3123, ezt@stthom.edu after the written portion. French students must arrange the oral portion, a personal interview, by appointment with French section head, Dr. Leguillon (713-525-3126, rolandel@stthom.edu) after the written portion. Placement evaluations in Latin or Greek are arranged through Classics section head, Dr. Yankow (713-525-3139, yankow@stthom.edu). Placement evaluations in German are arranged through German faculty, Dr. Hoefel (713-525-3121, uhoefel@ssafara.net).

 
Choose Only One Category of Four
Are you a true beginner--no formal study of Spanish and/or no practical experience with Spanish? Are you a --no formal study of Spanish and/or no practical experience with Spanish?

True beginners need not take the placement evaluation but must log in to be able to produce the results of the assessment letter to the professor on the first day of class for verification of class level at 1331.

Are you a non-native speaker of whatever ability?

NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS ARE DEFINED AS THOSE WHO HAVE LEARNED AT LEAST SOME SPANISH FORMALLY IN SCHOOL OR INFORMALLY IN A SPANISH-SPEAKING SETTING

Non-native speakers must take the placement evaluation and must produce the results of the assessment letter to the professor on the first day of class for verification of class level, at 1335 or above.

Are you a heritage speaker?

HERITAGE SPEAKERS ARE DEFINED AS PERSONS WITH AT LEAST ONE CLOSE RELATIVE WHO IS A "NATIVE-SPEAKER" AND/OR IN WHOSE HOME THE TARGET LANGUAGE IS SPOKEN AT LEAST SPORATICALLY AND WHO MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE STUDIED THE LANGUAGE FORMALLY.

Heritage speakers must take the placement evaluation and must produce the results of the assessment letter to the professor on the first day of class for verification of class level at 1333 or above.

Are you a native speaker?

NATIVE SPEAKERS ARE DEFINED AS

  1.  EITHER PERSONS WHOSE FIRST LANGUAGE WAS SPANISH AND HAVE MAINTAINED THAT LANGUAGE
  2. OR AS PERSONS WHO HAVE SUCH FACILITY AND/OR EXPERIENCE IN THE LANGUAGE THAT THEY FUNCTION AS AN EDUCATED NATIVE WOULD.

Native speakers need not take the placement evaluation.

Native speakers of languages other than English may fulfill their foreign language requirement by three options only:

  1. Two l000-2000 courses in the same language, other than their native one, which is offered by the Department;
  2. By two 3000-4000 level courses in the native language (no 1000 or 2000 level);
  3. By two literature-in-English-translation courses offered by the Department with prior written permission of the Department Chair.

7   3 core hrs. + 6 elective hrs.

IB Higher Level
4  3 core hrs. + 6 elective hrs.
5+  3 core hrs. + 9 elective hrs.

CLEP Language 50 +ACTFL Intermediate Low 3 core hrs.
CLEP Language 60 +ACTFL Intermediate Mid 3 core hrs. + 3 elective hrs.

 
Restrictions
  • Majors and native speakers may not challenge lower-division courses by examination
  • Lower-division courses are not open to native speakers.
