Drama

At UST Drama, we shape storytellers, educators, and creative leaders. Choose our BA in Drama, our BA in Theatre Education, the city’s only BFA in Musical Theatre, or a Minor in Drama to complement another major. You’ll graduate with professional experience, artistic rigor, and the confidence to make your mark. Alumni like Charles S. Krohn ’58, Houston theatre legend; Chris Tennison, artistic director at Trike Theatre; and Sean Patrick Flanery, star of Powder and Nefarious, all began their journeys right here. Yours starts now.

What will you do here? Everything—and more. Perform in professional venues like The MATCH and The DeLUXE Theatre. Train on stage and on camera. Compete at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF), audition nationally through SETC, and collaborate with working artists through Stoic Theatre, our resident professional company. From directing to design to devising original work, UST students don’t sit on the sidelines—they lead, create, and get noticed.

Turn your talent into a future. Our graduates go on to work in theatre, film, and education—and they do so with purpose. Many sign with agents before graduating, while others teach, direct, and inspire as certified theatre educators. Along the way, they gain transferable skills in communication, leadership, critical thinking, and innovation—skills employers value in every field. Parents often ask, Can my child make a living in theatre? The answer is yes—and they’ll love what they do.

Small Classes, Professional Training

  • Stage Time
    • From your first semester, you’ll perform in full productions at state of the art, professional venues like The MATCH and The DeLUXE Theater. You’ll graduate with real credits, not just classroom scenes.
  • Age-Appropriate Casting
    • We cast students in roles that reflect their age and readiness, and Houston professionals in the appropriate roles. That means roles that challenge you, fit your type, and build a résumé that makes sense in the professional world.
  • Guest Artists
    • Through Stoic Theatre, our resident professional company, you’ll work directly with guest directors, actors, and designers who are active in the industry—bringing fresh, real-world insight to your training.

  • Small Classes
    • You’ll never get lost in the crowd. Small class sizes mean focused attention, personalized feedback, and faculty who know your work and how to help you grow.

  • Internationally Recognized Faculty
    • Our faculty are working artists—published playwrights, Dramatists Guild members, Director’s Guild of Great Britian, Professional Actors, and certified experts in areas like SAFD and Lessac voice training.

  • Independent and Original Work
    • Students write, direct, and perform original plays, short films, and solo shows like Optimistic and Divine Mercy Witness. From student-devised work to world premieres like Pride and Prejudice and August Mother, opportunities like the Ampersand Festival and new work labs give you space to create—and be heard.
