Religion, Mental Health and the Search for Meaning

Does a division exist between the perspectives of religion and psychology? Why are so few mental health professionals trained to integrate religion and spirituality into their work with clients? These questions will be explored at Religion, Mental Health and the Search for Meaning, a free conference held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on August 28, in Jones Hall, 3910 Yoakum.

 
UST Offers MBA Course on Negotiation
The MBA special topic International Trade and Negotiations is an innovative summer course that Adjunct Professor Dr. Habib Chamoun-Nicolas is pioneering at University of St. Thomas Cameron School of Business. Chamoun-Nicolas, a worldwide recognized authority on the subject of negotiation, is using a wide spectrum of resources to get MBA students the best practices of negotiation art and science.
 
Read Fr. Gallagher’s Book About Marriage & Sexuality

The institution of marriage is crucially important for human well being. Sex, a powerful source of energy and motivation, either works to strengthen marriage or to destroy it. The traditional Catholic ethics set forth the norms to be followed if sex is to strengthen marriage rather than destroy it. These assertions are made by Moral Theologian Father John Gallagher, CSB, in his book, Human Sexuality and Christian Marriage: an Ethical Study. The University of St. Thomas website features a full manuscript.

 
UST Presents Elvis Musical “All Shook Up”
This summer, the stage will be rockin’ at the University of St. Thomas. All Shook Up, a musical based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night featuring the songs of Elvis Presley, will run at 8 p.m. on July 7-10 and 15-17; and a matinee at 2 p.m. on July 10 and 17, in Jones Theatre, 3910 Yoakum.
 
Knights of Columbus Host July 4 BBQ
Spend Independence Day watching the city’s firework’s displays with a spectacular rooftop view in the heart of Houston. The UST Knights of Columbus and Catholic Daughters invite you to the annual July 4 Barbeque on the Moran Center rooftop at 5 p.m. The meal is complimentary, but donations will be accepted.
 
GRACE Student Wins Teacher of the Year Award

The notorious first year of teaching – Lauren Barnes describes it as the hardest, but the best year of her life.  Barnes, a student in the UST Gulf Region Academy for Catholic Educators (GRACE) Program, spent the last year taking courses to earn a master’s degree in education while teaching fifth grade at Resurrection Catholic School. Barnes ended her first year earning an unexpected and unprecedented accolade – the Elementary Teacher of the Year award.

UST Offers Catholic Studies Minor in Italy & Holy Land
 

In This Issue:

University of St. Thomas students will have the unique opportunity to earn a minor in Catholic Studies in one semester while studying abroad in the Holy Land and Italy. UST will offer this rare pilgrimage, integrated learning and immersion in faith and culture, for the first time in spring 2011.
