UST Receives Nursing Grant, Raises $1 Million
The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the University of St. Thomas a $3.25 million grant to increase the number of Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students through the development of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program. At the Founder’s Nursing BenefitGala held on Nov. 18, UST also announced that they have raised $1 million to fund the Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza Endowed Chair in Nursing.
 
Nicole Casarez, Students Help Free Death Row Inmate
After spending the last 18 years in prison for crimes he did not commit, Anthony Graves is eternally grateful for Nicole Casarez, and a group of her former journalism students. Since 2002, Casarez, attorney and University of St. Thomas communication professor, and her students worked diligently to prove the innocence of former death row inmate Anthony Graves. The team succeeded, and Graves was set free on Oct. 27.
 
UST Hosts Celtic Christmas Concert
Slip back in time and savor the holiday season as it has been celebrated for centuries among the Celtic countries, with art, dance, song, music, storytelling and drama at “A Celtic Christmas with Danny O’Flaherty and Friends.” The event will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5 in Jones Hall. The event is hosted by the UST Center for Irish Studies Cultural Outreach Program.
 
University Singers Perform Christmas Carols

University Singers will perform, “An Evening of Lessons and Carols,” at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 6, in the Chapel of St. Basil. Dr. Brady Knapp will direct the ensemble in a program of seasonal carols, anthems, motets and readings from the Advent and Christmas narrative.

 
Dr. Aquila Explores Advent, Gregorian Chant

Dr. Dominic Aquila, UST vice president of Academic Affairs, will present the lecture, “Advent and New Beginnings: Gregorian Chant and Living the Liturgical Rhythms of the Year.” The lecture will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, in Cullen Hall. The lecture is part of the “Words, Deeds & Art” fall lecture series that is sponsored by the Serra Club of Houston, Notre Dame Club of Houston and the University of St. Thomas.

This fall, UST has continued to showcase the strength of the faculty by creating three new recruiting videos. These sample class videos featured Dr. Jo Meier-Marquis’ psychology class on interpersonal attraction; Dr. Rick Krustchinsky’s education class on the integration of mathematics and literature and Dr. Maia Larios-Sanz’s biology class on the nature of the cell.
