UST Tops Champions of Character List

For the fourth consecutive year, the UST Athletic Department has been recognized as a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Five Star Champions of Character for the 2010-2011 academic year. The Celts received this Five Star Award for exemplifying the core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.

 

UST Presents Snoopy Musical

The Drama Program of the Fine & Performing Arts department invites you to the musical comedy, Snoopy! The production will take place at 8 p.m. on Nov. 4, 5 and 6, upstairs in Jones Theatre, 3910 Yoakum.  Based on the world-renowned “Peanuts” comic strip, Snoopy! is the musical sequel to You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.  Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for students or seniors and $5 with a UST student ID. 

 

Lecture Explores John Paul II Play, “The Jeweler’s Shop”

The John Paul II Forum for the Church in the Modern World invites you to a performance of “The Jeweler’s Shop,” a play written by Karol Wojtyla, who later became Pope John Paul II, at 7 p.m., Nov. 4-5 or 2 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Obsidian Art Space, 3522 White Oak. Tickets are $15.  A lecture titled, “The Proper Weight of Love: John Paul II’s ‘The Jeweler’s Shop,’” will be given by Dr. Peter Casarella from 7-9 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 10 in Jones Hall, 3910 Yoakum, to explore the dramatic style, philosophy and theology of the play.

 

UST Raises Homelessness Awareness with National Sleep Out

The UST Social Justice Committee invites you to a National SleepOut event on Saturday, Nov. 12.  Members of the UST and Houston community are invited to bring their sleeping bags and spend the night on the Academic Mall in an effort to raise awareness about homelessness across the United States. Participants are encouraged to bring the bare minimum for the SleepOut event to best simulate living without the comforts of home.

 

Musical Showcases include Jazz Ensemble, Richard Nunemaker and Pop Singers

The UST Music Department invites you to three upcoming musical showcases. The Jazz Ensemble will perform from 7:30- 9 p.m. on Nov. 14; the Richard Nunemaker and Friends Concert featuring Johannes Brahms “Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, Op. 115” and the Oliver Massiaen, “Quartet for the End of Time” will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 15; and the Pop Singers Revue will perform musical theater selections 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 21-22;   All performances will take place in Cullen Hall. 

 

Ana María Martínez Gives Benefit Concert

To celebrate the unveiling of a planned Performing Arts and Conference Center at UST, world-renowned soprano and Houston Grand Opera favorite Ana María Martínez will perform a benefit concert at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 14, in Zilkha Hall of the Hobby Center. The concert will feature Cantos De Mi Corazón: Songs of My Heart, a collection of classic arias and Broadway favorites Martínez says have inspired her during critical moments of her life.

Ted Buck finds Veteran Support at UST

When Ted Buck returned from his third deployment to Iraq in 2008, he faced an economy in far worse condition than when he had left. Options were limited, and Buck knew he had to do something to make himself indispensable in the market place. As he was pondering his next move, Buck discovered he could apply his veteran educational benefits to earn a degree at a private university. Now, in his second year at St. Thomas, Buck is majoring in accounting in the five-year BBA/MBA program.
