UST Students Discern Vocation to Priesthood

The Basilian Fathers, founders of the University, are continuing a 200-year legacy of providing a strong Catholic education and leading individuals to Christ. The University is blessed to have three Basilian Novices enrolled in classes on campus. Hoc Minh Nguyen, Kittisak Chooklin and Steven Huber will discern on dedicating their lives to the service of others and to the three pillars of the Basilian way of life: goodness, discipline and knowledge.

Houston Symphony Concert Benefits UST

To bring the University closer to realizing its vision of enhancing the visual and performing arts for the campus and the Houston community, St. Thomas will partner with the world-renowned Houston Symphony to perform the New Vision, New Stars Benefit Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 22 at Jones Hall in the Houston Theater District. Guest conductor, Andrey Boreyko, will conduct Stravinsky’s Suite from “The Firebird,” Ravel’s “Pavane” and Mussorgsky/Ravel’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.” Tickets start at $35. 'Capacious’ St. Thomas Assessed in Lecture

Both John Paul II and Benedict XVI have urged Catholics to return to the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas in making difficult decisions. The Rev. Kevin Flannery, S.J., professor of philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, agrees there is good reason to follow Aquinas for guidance. He will present the University of St. Thomas Center for Thomistic Studies Aquinas Lecture on “The Capacious Mind of St. Thomas Aquinas,” at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 24 in Cullen Hall, 4001 Mt. Vernon St. The event is free and open to the public.

BOA Grant Advances Nursing Center

The St. Thomas Nursing Success Center, with the mission to help students reach their academic goals by providing educational enhancement services in a friendly “home-like” environment, has received a $20,000 grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation. The grant will ensure its diverse nursing students graduate with greatly needed Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees and long-term employment in nursing careers in Houston.

Four VB Players Honored as Scholar Athletes

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced four St. Thomas volleyball players as 2012 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes. Among the 408 volleyball student-athletes, Stephanie Biediger, Monica Litle, Kelsey Balderamos and Brittany Weiler made the cut.
