From Protest to Peace: A Lecture by Bogside Artist Tom Kelly from Derry, Northern Ireland
Wednesday, February 11, 2009 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM
Northern Ireland Bogside Artist Tom Kelly will deliver a lecture illustrating the twelve open-air murals that make up what is now known worldwide as “The People’s Gallery.” The murals document the experiences and tell the story of the people living in the community known as “The Bogside” of Derry City, Northern Ireland, through over thirty-five years of conflict and social unrest.
The lecture will present the commemorative murals in context, giving the history surrounding their creation as a means to objectify the past and bring about healing. The presentation also will provide insight into the high regard with which the people of The Bogside, the city and the world hold the murals as a means of social expression.
