The Friends of Archaeology present Jack Farrell: "The Silk Road Excursion"
Sunday, December 7, 2008 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Photo: Jack Farrell The Friends of Archaeology present Jack Farrell speaking on "The Silk Road Excursion," 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, in Anderson Hall.

In 2003 Jack Farrell of Houston and Vladimir Karasev of Uzbekistan began publishing their series of articles, "Archery Traditions Along the Silk Road". These two have leaned heavily on research of Russian archaeologists whose work remains mostly unknown in the West. Their series includes articles published in the United States, the UK and Germany on the subject of ancient archery.

To collect background material for this obscure subject, Farrell fulfilled a life-long dream earlier this year by traveling to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The "Silk Road Excursion" provides a portrait of life along the Old Silk Road while presenting new archery research materials.

Farrell will show slides of his travels: places, artifacts, architecture, faces, food, crafts ad antiquities from B.C. to the present. The Silk Road is a romantic but nebulous idea, without a time and about 4000 miles long, from the capitol of China to Rome and beyond.
