2010 Rev. William J. Young Social Justice Summer Conference "Caring for God's Creation"
Thursday, June 10, 2010 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
The University of St. Thomas Rev. William J. Young Social Justice Institute Summer Conference will focus on “Caring for God’s Creation: Catholic Teaching on Environmental Justice” from June 10 to 11 in Jerabeck Center, 4000 Mt. Vernon.

This conference will address the growing number of key environmental issues in the global society of the 21st century. Sessions will pay particular attention to how to incorporate Catholic teaching on the environment into Christian education ministry and parish social ministry. The event will be of particular interest to those working in social justice activism or educational ministry.

Keynote speakers are Dr. Kristin Shrader-Frechette, professor at the University of Notre Dame, and Walter Grazer, former Policy Advisor for European Affairs for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Breakout sessions will pay particular attention incorporating Catholic teaching on the environment into Christian education ministry and parish social ministry. His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo is the celebrant of the conference opening liturgy.

Shrader-Frechette’s lecture, “False Profits: Environmental Controversy, Private Interest and Science, and Who Gets Hurt,” will examine what counts as scientific evidence when assessing reports on environmental issues such as global warming. Grazer, author of Catholics Going Green, will discuss the principle of Catholic social teaching in relationship to environmental issues and then suggest practical ways this teaching can be incorporated into Christian education and social ministry.

Registration is $50; housing on campus for the two-day conference is $75 per night. For more information, contact Chris Lively at livelyc@stthom.edu or 713-525-3812 or visit www.theyounginstitute.org
