Tenebrae Service
Saturday, March 30, 2013 6:30 AM to 7:30 AM
The Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist invite you to share in a special Holy Week prayer service called Tenebrae. It is an ancient Lenten prayer held on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday mornings of Holy Week. Tenebrae combines the psalms and readings of Matins and Lauds.
Tenebrae means darkness; therefore, prayer begins in a darkened church with only the illumination of a lighted 15-candle candelabra. After each psalm, a candle is extinguished until at the end only the center candle, symbolizing Christ, remains. The service ends at dawn and all leave in silence.
