Marcus Walden at St. Thomas UniversityDuring spring break, two students from the University of St. Thomas traded the warmer Houston weather for snow-covered Canada. Rebecca Skaff, a senior international studies and communication major, and Marcus Walden, a senior environmental studies and theology major, traveled to Fredericton, New Brunswick, to present their research papers at a sister school, St. Thomas University, on March 13.

Andres CuellarThe Cameron School of Business and the Center for International Studies plan to offer a certificate in social entrepreneurship, which will empower students to become social entrepreneurs. The certificate also gives students the foundational knowledge and access to investors needed to transform social enterprise ideas into concrete, income-generating activities.

More than 80 students from the University of St. Thomas Filipino Student Association attended the Goodphil Games at Texas A&M University on March 13.  The weekend was filled with camaraderie, completion and bonding for the students involved.

Caleb KrollTwo students from the University of St. Thomas Music Preparatory School won first place in the piano solo categories of the Texas Music Teachers Association Performance Contest on Feb. 21, and will advance to the state finalist level where they will compete at the TMTA state convention in Dallas this June. The competition was held at the Houston Community College campus.

Mar 12, 2015  Thomistic Studies Graduate Student Earns Maritain Award
Francisco Plaza, a student from the University of St. Thomas Center for Thomistic Studies, was awarded the American Maritain Association Graduate Student Award at an annual conference held in San Francisco, Feb. 26–28. At least 50 people attended the conference.

Six-time U.S.  Ambassador and former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Pickering will deliver the 2015 Distinguished Diplomat Lecture titled, “Challenges Facing U.S. Foreign Policy to 2016.”

Stanfill Benefit ConcertThe SEP members raised $5,000 for the Austin Stanfill Traveling Fund at a benefit concert on Feb. 13 in memory of former SEP student executive board president Austin Stanfill ‘12. After Stanfill’s death in 2013, his family and the University of St. Thomas created this fund to sponsor other SEP members’ projects around the world.

University of St. Thomas President, Dr. Robert Ivany received the Leadership in Action Award at the 2015 West Point Society of Greater Houston Founders Day Celebration on Saturday, March 7.  Ivany has served as president of UST for 10 years and has continued the tradition of excellence the University has enjoyed.

The Cameron School of Business’ program, Celts Exploring Business, gives students the opportunity to visit local businesses and speak to current employees in companies across multiple industries.

Mar 03, 2015  Boot Camps Train, Prepare Students for Nursing School
Students from the University of St. Thomas Carol and Odis Peavy School of Nursing participated in the third year of the SON boot camps in early January. During the week-long camps held prior to the beginning of the spring semester, students learned how to adjust to the academic rigors of nursing school, to succeed in the nursing statistics class and to prepare for the Health Education Systems Incorporated (HESI) exam. 

Mar 02, 2015  Accounting Students Participate in Tax Season Service Learning
For more than 30 years, Ramon Fernandez ’79, assistant professor of accounting, has run the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, a program he started in 1984. This year more than 50 University of St. Thomas accounting students, alumni and friends will dedicate their Saturdays in tax season to serve the community by offering free income tax preparation and electronic filing.

The search for the next student commencement speaker is in progress. The commencement speaker will represent the UST student body during graduation, and have the opportunity to share his or her collegiate experience, hopes for the future and words of inspiration.

Lori Gallagher, J.D., director of the William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies, was recognized among the 2014 Irish Education 100 by Irish Voice, an Irish American newspaper and Irish America magazine.

Feb 26, 2015  Ambassador Witnesses to Vaticanís Global Diplomacy
Ambassador Francis RooneyAmbassador Francis Rooney, who was U.S. ambassador to the Holy See from 2005 to 2008, discussed his recent book, “The Global Vatican” on Feb. 11, at a dinner hosted by the Center for International Studies Distinguished Diplomat Program.  During his time at the Holy See, the Ambassador witnessed the quiet yet crucial diplomacy pursued by the pope through the Vatican’s extensive global diplomatic network.

A select group of undergraduate and graduate students from the University of St. Thomas Cameron School of Business attended the Celts Breakfast Club on Feb. 11, where they had the opportunity to speak and network with two business leaders.

Isaac BustosThe University of St. Thomas Music Department will present a performance by Isaac Bustos at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 27, in Cullen Recital Hall, located at 4001 Mt. Vernon. Bustos is a classical guitarist who will perform the music of Albeniz, Bach, Scarlatti, Piazzolla and more.

The University of St. Thomas Cameron School of Business will offer a minor in market analysis in the fall 2015 semester. The 18-hour minor will provide students with the tools to answer a variety of questions through data collection and analysis.

The dream of a relaxing family vacation is disrupted when two sisters find out that their nephews are dabbling in drug-use. That is the plot of a play by Dr. Janet Lowery, University St. Thomas professor and Cullen Chair of English and Creative Writing.

Feb 19, 2015  UST Celebrates Faculty for Black History Month
In celebration of Black History Month the University of St. Thomas has created an exhibit highlighting African-America leaders honored by the U.S. Postal Service in their Black Heritage Series in Crooker Center. The exhibit is on display for the month of February and includes prominent black historical figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Benjamin Banneker and Bessie Coleman.

The University of St. Thomas and seven other Texas universities participated in the American Mock Trial Association Regional Tournament, which was held in Dallas on Jan. 30 – Feb. 2.

The University of St. Thomas will offer a bachelor’s degree in Criminology, Law and Society beginning fall 2015. The social justice-oriented CLS degree focuses on the problem of crime and on understanding the social, cultural, political and economic forces that interact with the law.

Through hard work, determination and perseverance, 56 students celebrated their graduation from the Cameron School of Business at the University of St. Thomas on Dec. 13, 2014. CSB hosted a Graduate Recognition Ceremony following the Winter Graduation Mass and Brunch that day for students, their families and faculty members.

Jan 27, 2015  Indiegogo Campaign Raises $6,000 for Study Abroad
The University of St. Thomas Freshman Symposium began a fundraising campaign on Nov. 25, with the goal of raising $5,000 to help UST freshman visit Italy and Costa Rica for their First Year Experience Study Abroad. One month and five days later, the Indiegogo campaign surpassed its goal, raising nearly $6,000 dollars.

Edward Kelleher, visiting scholar for the William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies, will join 39 other men and women honored in this year’s Irish Echo’s annual Irish Top 40 under 40 awards. The award is a celebration of Irish and Irish Americans who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields of work before reaching the age of 40.
