Attending the Carol and Odis Peavy School of Nursing at the University of St. Thomas in Houston means you will focus on holistic nursing. This is a form of nursing that engages with a patient’s body, mind and spirit to care for the whole person. To build an effective relationship with patients and facilitate their healing, nurses need to speak articulately, write clearly, reason well and make good decisions. Those “process skills” are strengthened through the University's core curriculum and in the small classes you’ll find in the nursing program. UST’s School of Nursing offers undergraduate and graduate nursing degrees, with on-campus and online learning opportunities. The four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program incorporates UST’s core curriculum, specific pre-nursing courses and courses in the nursing major. This major prepares students for initial RN licensure and entry into the workforce. Additionally, the second-degree Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program offers a fast track for students with non-nursing bachelor’s degrees to earn their BSN in as few as 12 months. Graduates may become Nurse Practitioners with a master’s or doctorate degree. The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program is designed for working nurses wanting to advance their nursing career. Similarly, the RN-to-MSN program is tailored for nurses working full-time, who have an Associate Degree in Nursing and looking to obtain an MSN. Coursework is primarily online and supplemented with lab work on the UST campus. Professional nurses may also expand their abilities through the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. UST’s DNP program offers tracks in Transformational Leadership and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). Additionally, UST offers a Post-APRN or Post-Master’s Certificate for Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).
