|Sep 20, 2018 First Dissertation for Ed.D Program in Ethical Leadership Scheduled in October|
The University of St. Thomas celebrates a milestone when Candace Brawner defends her dissertation on Oct. 19. Brawner will be the very first student to defend her dissertation in the University’s Ed.D. Program in Ethical Leadership, part of the School of Education and Human Services. Her topic is “Fifty Years Since Title IX: Status of Recruitment and Advancement of Female Athletic Administrators in Texas School Districts.” More students from the program will soon follow.

|Sep 11, 2018 Chemistry Professor Wins 2018 Mentor on the Map NOBCChE Award|
University of St. Thomas Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Dr. Javoris Hollingsworth, received the 2018 Mentor on the Map Award from the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE). According to NOBCChE, the award is based on the dedication the recipient has shown to the educational development of others and the passion he has shown for STEM.

The Italian Cultural & Community Center (ICCC) will host the 40th Houston Italian Festival from Thursday, October 11 to Sunday, October 14, 2018 on the campus of the University of St. Thomas. Festa Italiana is an annual festival founded with the mission of celebrating Italian culture and heritage in the city of Houston. Recognized as a significant cultural event in the city, Festa Italiana has numerous activities to offer its guests. Admission is free for faculty, staff and students of the University of St. Thomas with a valid UST ID.

UST will reintroduce a dance program through a partnership with METdance, one of Houston’s largest dance companies. The development of this proposed dance program is in the works, but UST has let students have a sneak peek into the program this fall by offering a few dance courses as electives. Courses are being held at the METdance Center, offering Ballet I in a morning and evening class.

On August 5, Dr. John E. Simms received the Best Contribution to Teaching Award from the American Accounting Association in Washington, D.C. Simms was given this prestigious award for his paper, “Teaching Accounting Ethics using Ex Corde Eccesiae,” a study focused on connecting Catholic ethics and accounting compliances.

|Aug 23, 2018 STEM Center Hosts Celt Community Mural Project|
To start the new school year, the University of St. Thomas STEM Center hosted the Celt Community Mural Project. The event began Friday, Aug. 17 during Freshman Orientation and continued Monday, Aug. 20, the first day of classes. Students, faculty and staff from all departments took part in painting the murals, which were designed in a paint-by-number format to allow participation.

The University of St. Thomas announced it hired former professional tennis player Jack Brasington III as the head coach of the school’s varsity men's and women's tennis teams, which will take to the court in the fall of 2019. This is the first time in its 71-year history that UST has fielded a men or women’s tennis team.

Houston Police Department Training Division has partnered with University of St. Thomas Center for International Studies and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office Houston to offer specialized Mandarin Chinese training as an elective course for two 10-week sessions at the West Side Station. Additionally, the Center will offer elective training in multicultural and situational awareness for Houston Police Officers at the Houston Police Academy throughout 2018-19. Both training courses are offered as professional credit programs.

Former NASA Astronaut and Air Force Col. Michael E. Fossum will deliver the keynote address at University of St. Thomas’ 24th Annual Spring Research Symposium. Fossum’s inspiring talk, Passion to Reach, chronicles his 13-year journey to become an astronaut. Despite setbacks, Fossum fostered a spirit of excellence during his training and achieved his goals. Fossum, a veteran of three space flights has logged more than 194 days in space, including more than 48 hours in seven spacewalks, served as an astronaut from 1998 until his retirement in 2017.

Spend the morning of Good Friday, March 30, 2018, in a reflective procession carrying the cross from University of St. Thomas’ Chapel of St. Basil to the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. The 2.2-mile procession includes five stations, gospel readings, reflections and choral presentations. Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza will provide a blessing at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

They were joined by the University Singers under the direction of Dr. Brady Knapp, and the St. Thomas Singers of St. Thomas High School, under the direction of Mr. Joshua Wilson, who performed Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee, Let There Be Peace on Earth and Sing Gloria!.

The Department of Campus Ministry at the University of St. Thomas will integrate into the framework of the Donald S. Nesti, CSSp Center for Faith and Culture. Through the leadership of Fr. Chris Valka, CSB, director Center for Faith and Culture, and in collaboration with Fr. Dave Bittner, CSB, campus chaplain, President Dr. Richard Ludwick has approved the merger between the two departments. The reorganization stems from the ideas and concepts around how faith is lived, nurtured and celebrated on campus. Since its founding, UST has strived to live the meaning of Catholic with the universality that defines the Faith; as it serves people of all beliefs and backgrounds.
