Army Surgeon Sister Dede Speaks at Graduation

A U.S. Army colonel, doctor and sister of Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts, Sister Deirdre “Dede” Mary Byrne, POSC, will address the 2012 University of St. Thomas graduating class at the 62nd Commencement Ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 12 at Reliant Arena, One Reliant Park. The ceremony will celebrate the achievements of 323 undergraduates and 747 graduate students.


Panel Discusses Threats to Religious Freedom

In conjunction with the Office of the President, the University of St. Thomas Center for Faith and Culture hosted a panel discussion on April 12, about religious freedom – it’s place within our Constitution, current threats to it and how best to respond to these threats within a Catholic context. The panelists were R. Randall Rainey, scholar of constitutional law and public policy, the Most Rev. Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, archbishop of Galveston-Houston, and Francis Rooney, former U.S. ambassador to the Holy See.


MAFC Graduate Integrates Faith and Theater

For eight years in Los Angeles, Sara Kumar worked as an electrical engineer by day and a theater artist, writer and director by night. In 2010, Kumar stumbled across the University of St. Thomas Center for Faith and Culture website and flew to Houston on a whim that weekend for a visit. She is among the first six graduates of the Master of Arts in Faith and Culture program and is producing a play “Magdalene,” about the life of Mary Magdalene.


Support AOS Students During Lemonade Day at UST

Elementary students from Annunciation Orthodox School will sell lemonade at the University of St. Thomas at 2-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 6 on the Academic Mall. Lemonade Day is a collaboration between AOS, the UST School of Education and the Cameron School of Business. This spring, UST faculty provided 14 lessons on topics like site selection, finding an investor, purchasing and advertising. The final lesson will be about how the students can use their profits to give back to the community.

5th Ward Teachers Earn Masters in Leadership

Enedith Silerio and Esmeralda Padron will graduate with master’s degrees in educational leadership from the University of St. Thomas this May, to prepare them to be principals. Both women work as elementary school teachers at Sherman Elementary, in the 5th Ward community where they grew up in immigrant families, and each is the first in her family to earn a master’s degree.
