University Singers Span the Centuries

Join the University of St. Thomas Music Program for an evening of choral music spanning the centuries at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 4 in the Chapel of St. Basil. The University Singers are directed by Dr. Brady Knapp with guest conductor Courtney Daniell-Knapp. The event is free and open to the public.

Mosaics of Faith Examines Irish Experience
The University of St. Thomas will hold the Mosaics of Faith: The Irish Experience Conference at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5. Events will be held throughout the day, culminating with a lecture by Dr. Peter Harbison, of the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin, Ireland. His lecture, “Walking in the Paths of Early Irish Christians: Monasteries, Crosses and Pilgrimages,” will be held in the Scanlan Room, Jerabeck Center, 4000 Mt. Vernon.
Houston Texans President Speaks at UST Fundraiser
Houston Texans President Jamey Rootes will lead the line-up as the keynote speaker at the University of St. Thomas Champions Club Benefit Luncheon scheduled for 11:30 a.m. May 6 in Scanlan Room, Jerabeck Center, 4000 Mt. Vernon.
Rev. William J. Young Social Justice Conference
The 2010 Rev. William J. Young Social Justice Summer Conference titled, "Caring for God's Creation: Catholic Social Teaching and Environmental Issues," is a two-day conference to be held June 10 - 11. Keynote Speakers are Dr. Shrader-Frechette, University of Notre Dame and Walter Grazer, author of Catholics Going Green.
Alumnus, Hits High Note at Oratorio Competition

From the University of St. Thomas to Yale to performing in Carnegie Hall, singer Joe Mikolaj is making joyful noise on stages across the country. A 2008 UST graduate, Mikolaj will earn a master’s degree from the Yale Institute of Sacred Music and the Yale School of Music in May. He recently took first prize at the New York Oratorio Society’s Lyndon Woodside Solo Competition on April 10.

Clinton Global Initiative Features UST MicroCredit
Four University of St. Thomas students represented the UST MicroCredit Program at the Clinton Global Initiative at the University of Miami from April 16-18. In their second year to attend CGI U, University of St. Thomas MicroCredit was named a “featured commitment.” A video highlighting UST MCP was shown at the poverty alleviation workshops. Of nearly 1,000 commitments, only about 20 were featured.

George Foreman Addresses Graduates at 2010 Commencement Ceremony

Former World heavyweight boxing champion and businessman George Foreman
will address the University of St. Thomas 2010 graduating class about “Success with Integrity,” at the 60th Commencement Ceremony, to be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 15 at Reliant Arena. The ceremony will celebrate the achievements of 305 undergraduates and 320 graduate students. Nicole Keith will take the stage as the student commencement speaker. She is a communication major and theology minor from Pearland. Her speech is titled, “A Generation of Possibility.” Honorary doctorates will be given to David M. McClanahan, President and Chief Executive Officer of CenterPoint Energy, and Dr. Joseph McFadden, University of St. Thomas President Emeritus. McClanahan previously served as Chairman of the UST Board of Directors from 1998-2002. The Vincent J. Guinan Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented to Vincent D’Amico, class of 1952.
