Secretary James A. Baker to Address Class of 2011

The Honorable James A. Baker III, 61st Secretary of State and 67th Secretary of Treasury, will address the University of St. Thomas 2011 graduating class at the 61st Commencement Ceremony. Commencement will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 14, at Reliant Arena, located at One Reliant Park. The student commencement speaker will be Ivan Earls. An honorary doctorate will be given to Father Patrick Braden, CSB. Burney Hebinck ’55 will receive the Vincent J. Guinan Distinguished Alumni Award.

Cameron School Receives AACSB Accreditation
The University of St. Thomas Cameron School of Business joins an elite group of institutions that have achieved business accreditation from The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International). Only 620 schools of business, or less than 5 percent worldwide, have earned this distinguished hallmark of excellence in management education.
UST Grads Launch Summer Program for High-Schoolers

Inspired by their University of St. Thomas honors education, 2009 graduates Joseph Morton and Thomas Mendez have launched the Paideia Institute, a nonprofit organization to prepare promising high school students for success in college. The organization’s inaugural program, the Paideia Summer Academy, will take place July 5-22 on the UST campus.

UST Presents Elvis Musical “All Shook Up”
This summer, the stage will be rockin’ at the University of St. Thomas. All Shook Up, a musical based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night featuring the songs of Elvis Presley, will run at 8 p.m. on July 7-10 and 15-17; and a matinee at 2 p.m. on July 10 and 17, in Jones Theatre, 3910 Yoakum.
Knights of Columbus Host July 4 BBQ
Spend Independence Day watching the city’s firework’s displays with a spectacular rooftop view in the heart of Houston. The UST Knights of Columbus and Catholic Daughters invite you to the annual July 4 Barbeque on the Moran Center rooftop at 5 p.m. The meal is complimentary, but donations will be accepted.
GRACE Student Wins Teacher of the Year Award

The notorious first year of teaching – Lauren Barnes describes it as the hardest, but the best year of her life.  Barnes, a student in the UST Gulf Region Academy for Catholic Educators (GRACE) Program, spent the last year taking courses to earn a master’s degree in education while teaching fifth grade at Resurrection Catholic School. Barnes ended her first year earning an unexpected and unprecedented accolade – the Elementary Teacher of the Year award.

UST To Build Performing Arts and Conference Center

In This Issue:

The University of St. Thomas will celebrate the unveiling of a planned Performing Arts and Conference Center with a concert by world-renowned opera singer Ana Maria Martinez. The concert, rescheduled for fall 2011, will feature Cantos De Mi Corazón: Songs of My Heart, a collection of classic arias and Broadway favorites Martinez says have inspired her during critical moments of her life.
