As Houston prepares for a Hurricane, the UST Police Department and UST Office of Emergency Management are constantly monitoring the weather conditions to ensure the UST community stays safe and prepared. In case of evacuation or shelter-in-place, these items should be gathered at the start of hurricane season – June 1:
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Battery-powered radio with extra batteries
- First aid kit
- Prescription medication and prescriptions
- Eyeglasses or contact lenses (with prescription)
- Water (at least one gallon per person per day is recommended)
- Non-perishable foods
- Can opener
- Cell phone and car charger
- Extra clothes for each person for a week, in case the University is closed temporarily after the storm
- Sleeping bag or bedroll and pillow for each person
- Checkbook and cash (credit cards and ATMs may not work if there is no power)
- Rain gear
- Toiletries
- Shoes
- Map of the area
- Filter mask or cotton T-shirt
- Garbage bags and duct tape
| Important papers to take with you for evacuation: - Driver’s license or personal identification
- Social security card
- Insurance policies
- Birth and marriage certificates
- Stocks, bonds and other negotiable certificates
- Wills, deeds and copies of recent tax returns

| Hurricane/School Closure
In the event of a hurricane warning, University officials will communicate closures via UST Alerts.
- Upon notification of a school closure, the campus community should:
- Follow specific department evacuation procedures.
- Remove all items from balconies/patios.
- Turn off computers and printers. Then cover computers and printers with plastic garbage bags and move them away from windows.
- Put loose papers in desk drawers or filing cabinets.
- Unplug all electrical appliances, but do NOT unplug phones or the lines will not work.
- Turn off air/heat and lights.
- Close and lock all doors and windows.
- Alert your supervisor if you are evacuating the area and provide contact information.
- Do not return to campus unless told to do so by a University official.
