About the Burnett Endowed Chair
Mr. Charles Burnett III funded the Burnett Endowed Chair at UST in honor of his parents, Miriam Weston Burnett and father, Charles Burnett, who served in the armed forces. The family believed that ethical leadership was the fundamental value on which successful institutions, corporations and organizations were built. The Burnetts wished to ensure that ethical leadership was an integral part of the curriculum at the University of St. Thomas. The first chair holder of the Burnett Chair at UST was an outstanding author, teacher and Professor Emeritus of Columbia, John Whitney.

In the fall of 2015, the University's Board of Directors voted to establish the Center for Ethical Leadership in which the chair holder now resides. To ensure leadership was encouraged in as many disciplines as possible, four separate leadership minors were created. The present chair holder, Dr. Joseph Cerami, joined the faculty from the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University in January 2016. Mr. Charles Burnett III has also agreed to fund scholarships to selected students who pursue these minors.
