Donald S. Nesti, CSSp, Center for Faith & Culture at the University of St. Thomas Appoints Fr. Chris Valka, CSB, as Center Director

The University of St. Thomas Donald S. Nesti, CSSp, Center for Faith & Culture (CFC) has appointed Fr. Chris Valka, CSB, as the director for the Center.

A native Houstonian, Fr. Chris has a Bachelor’s of Arts from St. Edward’s University, a Master’s of Science in Education Administration from Canisius College, and a Masters of Divinity from the University of St. Michael’s College in Toronto, Ontario.  Before his ordination to the priesthood in 2009, Fr. Valka taught in the Houston Independent School District at Westbury High School and worked in Marketing and Advancement for the Associated Catholic Charities in the city of Houston.  

Fr. Chris has a wide range of experience in ministry, including serving on the Executive Team of World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia, the Holy See Mission at the United Nations, and Salt and Light Television.  Fr. Chris has worked in education for more than 15 years and is active with conferences and various professional organizations. Prior ot his appointment at the Center for Faith and Culture, Fr. Chris most recently served as the Pastor of St. Basil’s Catholic Church at the University of St. Michael’s College.

Founding Director and namesake of the Center for Faith and Culture, Fr. Donald S. Nesti, CSSp, stated, “The center is well-positioned for the next phase of its mission. I am confident that Father Valka will lead the Center’s academic programs, its ecumenical and interreligious endeavors, and its ongoing adult education and pastoral initiatives.”

About the Donald S. Nesti, CSSp, Center for Faith & Culture

The Center for Faith and Culture (CFC) was established in 1994 by the University of St. Thomas, under the direction of Rev. Donald S. Nesti, CSSp, as an internal and external outreach center to the Houston community and surrounding area.  Since its founding, the Center and its leadership have sought to develop an integrated approach to the American way of life and the values of the Gospel that is responsive to contemporary needs of American Catholics and other faiths, making dialogue the primary mode in which it undertakes its activities and programmatic offerings.  The Center serves as a catalyst for communication and dialogue amongst the different disciplines offered within the University of St. Thomas.

The Center seeks to understand and affect the relationship between and among the many facets of the American way of life in relation to God’s ongoing, loving encounter with humanity. We educate faith-full citizens to be artisans of dialogue and proclamation in articulating a God-centered vision of the world and how that vision strengthens the institutions that govern us as a people. Through its programmatic offerings the Center serves the local and regional Catholic, ecumenical and interreligious communities, our sister university communities, civic society, and various professional segments of our culture.
