The Communication Department at the University of St. Thomas educates students from both a professional and theoretical approach, combining theories of communication with practical application. The coursework has a strong liberal arts foundation, which combines classroom education with real-world experience.

A sample of the wide variety of offerings at UST includes the following:

  • Newswriting and reporting
  • Feature writing
  • News editing
  • Public relations
  • Investigative reporting
  • Radio production
  • TV production
  • Persuasion
  • Media ethics
  • Public speaking

All communication majors are required to participate in internships. The centralized location of UST near downtown, the Texas Medical Center and the Galleria makes it ideal to pursue positions with local media, business and nonprofit organizations, including broadcast stations NBC 2, CBS 11, ABC 13 and FOX 26; Univision; Telemundo; Clear Channel radio stations; local sports teams; Shell Oil and the Children’s Museum.

Additionally, there are major-specific opportunities for communication majors through the Service-Learning Program. One such experience is the Innocence Investigations in which students participate in interviewing and investigating potentially wrongfully imprisoned Texans.
